Librarian Interview: AASL Standard- Collaborate

Image
Introduction      For this interview, I spoke with Ellen Scott, the librarian at Blythewood Middle School. Our discussion focused on the shared foundation Collaborate with an emphasis on the Share and Grow domains. When choosing which competencies to focus on during our interview, I had a hard time choosing between these two and decided to incorporate a little bit of both into our discussion. Our conversation focused on her current implementation of these competencies as well as her plans for future application. These competencies focus on the student's ability to receive feedback from their peers, consider diverse perspectives, and recognize their responsibility for actively contributing to group learning. While these competencies are similar to the one I discussed with Christine Baker at Jackson Creek Elementary, I wanted to be able to compare how this concept is implemented at the elementary and middle school levels. Questions 1.  What are some examples of the ...

Librarian Interview: AASL Standard- Engage

Image
Introduction      For this interview, I chose to have a discussion with Chrystal Smith at Blythewood High School, focusing on the Engage shared foundation with a special emphasis on the Create domain. This standard focuses on ethically using information and acknowledging authorship. I was curious about Chrystal's insight concerning the standard in relation to her current work in a high school, as well as in reference to her previous role as a school librarian at an intermediate school that worked with grades four through six. We had a very rich discussion, mostly pertaining to citations and how important it is for us to establish these information skills as early on as possible. We also heavily emphasized how important it is to make sure that the other educators in the building understand copyright and fair use laws so that they can hold their students accountable for crediting sources appropriately.  Questions 1.  What are some examples of the ways in which y...

Reading Reflection 2 (Week 5) Me performing a puppet show version of Petunia by Roger Duvoisin. Program Planning      While telling a story to children may seem simple, a storytelling program requires proper planning and a bit of flexibility. It is suggested, especially when working with a mixed-aged group, that you begin the storytelling event with a story that is suitable for the younger members of the audience to catch their attention, then you may proceed to a story that has more depth and meaning and is comprehensible by the entire group, lastly, you may end with a short story that targets the older audience is humorous or participatory to end your program on a lighter more ...
